The IAM’s Structure

Because of the IAM’s extensive reach into different sectors and geographies, the climate crisis will touch every member’s workplaces and communities, but often in very different ways. In order to understand both the threats and opportunities that come with the energy transition, it is important to outline how the IAM organizes its membership.

The IAM is divided into seven territories and one division. Five of the union’s territories–Canada, Eastern, Midwest, Southern, and Western–cover members in most sectors within a specific geographic area. The other two territories, as well as one division, cover all workers from a specific sector across the entire United States. The Air Transport Territory has a national footprint and covers roughly 100,000 airport workers, while the Rail Division covers several rail- related areas of work in Washington, DC, and 31 states. The DC and Vicinity Territory, despite its name, covers mostly federal government workers in Washington, DC, and over two dozen states across the lower 48. A visual breakdown of the IAM’s structure is found below.69
